Carol Berry weaves with ecological consciousness in mind. She began to wonder how she could create color in a way that was kind to the earth. Berry was prompted to begin dyeing her own materials, some of which she grew locally in the Outback Farm at Western.
The Outback is a two hectare farm at Western Washington University. The farm has over 40 individual plots, which are available for use to students, staff, faculty, and the community at no cost. Berry planted Japanese Indigo in March, and harvested the leaves in August to use as a dye.
Unlike synthetic fibers, which release plastic microfibers into the ocean and are harmful to marine life, these natural woven fibers nourish the earth when they are returned to it.

Well, I was all set to moan and complain about the long, cold, wet, miserable winter/false Spring we are having, but magically, the weather is finally warming up and color is everywhere. What an exciting Guild year this is. One of the reasons I so enjoy editing the newsletter is receiving and reading all the news of the events, both inside and outside the Guild. Kudos to our Board members and their willing helpers, bringing alive programs, workshops, field trips, participation in conferences, inspiration of a new generation of weavers, outreach programs to our community.
Read on! Program news on page 2, the upcoming Wool Show in August on page 4, Small Looms Group on page 5, many workshops and classes on page 6 and more news on our October Fibers and Beyond workshops and sale on pages 7-9. If you are planning on attending ANWG’s Victoria conference in June, our ANWG representative, Liz Moncrief, has advice on getting there on page 10. As usual our classifieds, days and dates pages (11-15) have many exciting opportunities not to be missed. Our May program, the famed Daryl Lancaster, will be one of our high spots this year—don’t miss it!

Pat Fisher, Newsletter Coordinator.
